Thailand’s New Prime Minister, Cabinet Sworn-In

Thailand’s new Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her 34-member Cabinet, have reportedly taken an oath of office before King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Friday, local media reported.

Shinawatra, 37, of the Pheu Thai Party, and her Cabinet members pledged their allegiance to the King and Queen Suthida during a ceremony at Bangkok’s Dusit Palace, according to the Bangkok Post.

Her Cabinet includes six deputy prime ministers from the coalition government’s three main parties: Pheu Thai, Bhumjaithai, and the United Thai Nation.

Shinawatra, the country’s 31st and youngest prime minister, is also the daughter of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

She officially received royal assent to hold the office on August 18, two days after being elected by parliament, securing more than the required 247 votes in the 493-seat lower house.

Shinawatra is the third prime minister from the influential Shinawatra family, following her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra, who previously held the position.

Her appointment comes after the Thai Constitutional Court removed Srettha Thavisin from office due to an ethics violation. — Agencies via SG
