Aggrieved Persons With Disabilities In Kebbi State Allege Marginalization

Persons with disabilities in Kebbi state have expressed grievances over an alleged, “unfair, discrimination and marginalization on appointments into Kebbi State Persons with disabilities Commission.”

In a letter addressed to the Speaker, Kebbi state House of Assembly, and signed by the Chairman, IDEAnigeria, Hamidu Amadu, on behalf of  four Associations including, national association of blinds ( NAB) Kebbi state chapter, Nigeria association of Deaf (NNAD) Kebbi state chapter, IDEA Nigeria Kebbi state chapter, Nigeria association of persons with albinism Kebbi state chapter, the members said they were “disappointed over the recent appointment into the Disability Commission in Kebbi State, describing it “unfair.”

According to the letter, they  are “calling the attention of the Governor and authorities of Disability Commission in Kebbi State to take steps in addressing the issue.”

“We are compelled to bring to your attention the following grievances,” they wrote.

“During the first appointment of the five (5)  SSAs, not a single person from the Deafs , persons affected by leprosy, persons with albinism and blinds, clusters was appointed, while all the appointees were from the physically challenged cluster.

“In the second appointment of the governing Board members of the commission , all the appointees are again from the physically challenged cluster, leaving the Deafs , the persons affected by leprosy, the persons with albinism and blinds , clusters unrepresented.

“This unfair representation is a clear violation of the rights of the Deafs , persons affected by leprosy, persons with albinism and blinds communities  as enshrined in the Disability Commission Act.”

They said they were demanding equal representation and opportunities in Kebbi state Disability Commission.

“We urge you (Hon. Speaker) to take immediate action to address this injustice, marginalization and discrimination to ensure that the appointments are reverse or to include other clusters in a fair and inclusive manner,” they added.
