Joe Lartey was a revered figure in Ghanaian sports journalism for his sports commentary and other national events.
He began his journalism career in 1961 when he joined the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation as a Senior Programmes Assistant, writing stories and also editing stories for presentation on radio.
During match days, he joined the sports team, summarising matches during half-time breaks.
Eventually, he found his way to the Sports Department on a full-time basis, where his talent was enhanced, captivating audiences with his voice.
Through his skill and knowledge, he became a dominant voice in sports commentary, particularly in football and over time, became a household name, alongside the likes of Edward Faakye.
GBC, in a bid to ensure that football commentary was run in as many languages as possible, anytime someone had to hand over the microphone to Joe Lartey would say ‘over to you Joe Lartey’, which gradually became his nickname.
He not only brought the matches to life through his voice but also etched his mark on Ghana’s football cultural fabric.
