A notorious Kidnap gang, terrorizing Ikot Ekpene and Essien Udim local government areas and surroundings in Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria, has been neutralized by the State Police Command.
A statement by the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John says, acting on credible intelligence, a joint tactical team of the command stormed multiple criminal hideouts at Ikpe Annang, Ikpe Ikot Akpan and Ikot Inyang in Essien Udim local government area.
The statement added that, on sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire in a desperate bid to escape and avoid arrest.
The gallant officers responded decisively engaging them in a gun duel. At the end of the operation, the five suspects sustained various degrees of injuries and taken to hospital and one of them died while receiving treatment.
Items recovered.
Items recovered from them include one AK-47 rifle, one G3 rifle, one pump action rifle, one locally made Dane gun and a bag of crayfish.
Others are one tambourine, an electric power amplifier, one conga drum, three GSM button phones and three Million, one hundred and thirty six thousand Naira cash.
The command says further investigations are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the operatives for their bravery and called on residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious activities promptly.
He gave an assurance that efforts will be intensified to ensure that Akwa Ibom state remains safe and secured for all law abiding citizens.
