Kano State Government says, it is ready to establish Press Trust Fund.
The State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this, on Thursday, during an Iftar organised by the State Ministry of Information for Journalists in the State.
The Information Commissioner said, the Trust Fund will cater for the welfare of Journalists and help improve their various news outlets.
Waiya, who was emotionally charged about what he called ‘misinformation’ among Journalists in the state also disclosed that his Ministry was putting in place Kano State Ministry of Information Advisory Council.
According to him, the Information Advisory Council, which he has already constituted seven members, for now, will be headed by a veteran Broadcsster, Alhaji Ahmed Aminu.
The Council, he explained, will help advance the course of information dissemination in the State.
Waiya expressed disaffection over the report of the purported arrest of two Journalists (not Nigerian Kicker) saying “they were never arrested and they never spent more than 30 minutes during questioning.”
“I am not discouraged by this development and I remain a friend of Journalists.
“No one can separate me and the Press,” he vowed.
While emphasizing his good relationship with the Press, the Commissioner promised to undergo a training himself and obtain a certificate in Journalism.
Our Correspondent reports that the Iftar, which is the first of its kind, brought together, veteran Journalists, Information Managers, and some members of the accademia in the State.
They include, Alhaji Ahmed Aminu, Muhammad Danyaro, Dr. Farouk Umar Usman and Alhaji Bello Sani Galadanchi who took turn to speak on what they observed as the appalling journalism practice among practitioners in the state calling for training and retraining to address the trend.
Others who attended the Iftar are, members of the Association of Online Media Guild (ASSOMEG), members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), members of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and members of the Correspondent Chapel of NUJ, Kano State Council among others.
