Report from Otukpo town in Benue State, North Central Nigeria says, residents of the town are protesting against the growing insecurity in their area, marked by frequent killings and kidnappings.
The demonstration, which took place on April 1, 2025, saw many locals blocking key roads to demand action from the government and security forces.
The report says, the protests were sparked by the “increasing number of attacks” that have left residents feeling unsafe in their homes.
The demonstrators expressed frustration over what they called “the lack of government response” and the recurring nature of the violence.
Many of the protesters have been living in fear, with some even fleeing their homes to escape the violence.
The protests reflect a wider concern among locals some of whom pointed out that “power outages, often coinciding with attacks, might be a tactic used to facilitate the crimes.”
Despite the scale of the protest, no security forces had been sent to Otukpo at the time of reporting. – ST
