Bayero University, Kano, North West Nigeria, has hosted the Maiden Edition of the Nigerian Universities Qur’anic Recitation Competition, (NUQREC).
Nigerian Kicker reports that the competition ended on Thursday at the Convocation Arena of the University, new Campus.
It was organized by the Center for Qur’anic Studies, Buk in conjunction with Zone ‘A of Muslims Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN).
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the competition, the Director of the Center for Qur’anic Studies, Buk, Prof Ahmad Murtala said the competition “is aimed at bringing unity among Nigerian Universities through Qur’anic recitation among the students as they pursue western education.”
He added that for now the competition would be limited to Universities in the north but that as it grows it will cover all the Nigerian Universities.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Prof Sagir Adamu Abbas represented by the DVC Management, Prof Aliyu Adamu assured the people of the institution’s resolve to support the move for more upright society.
Coordinator of Zone ‘A’ Muslims Students Society of Nigeria, Prof Abdullahi Yunus said part of the aims of the Competition “is to change the narrative whereby instructions of learning are seen as places where morality or religious teachings is negated.”
This he said would give an avenue to learn both forms of knowledge so as to have a balance professionals.
At the end of the competition, Abdussamad Bello of Bayero University emerged overall winner in Sixty Hizbs and received a cash prize of 700,000 naira, Usman Farouk Yahuza from Alkalam University received first prize of 500,000 naira in Forty Hizbs while the first position of twenty Hizbs was clinched by Saifullah Sanusi of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi and took away 350, 000 naira as prize
The next NUQREC competition is expected to be hosted by Yobe State UniversityUniversity, Damaturu.
