Communities In Imo State To Abolish Caste System (Osu)

Report from Imo State, South East Nigeria says, two communities in the State, Amurie Omanze and Oboro Amurie in Isu Local Government Area is set to abrogate the caste systems.

A statement by the Executive Director of Pillars of Hope Africa Initiative (POHAI), Chinyere Oge-Kalu said, the abolishment of Osu, Ohu, Ume and Diala Caste systems will take effect in January 2024.

According to her, the Abrogation of the systems from the communities was a fruit of years of advocacy by the National Human Rights Commission and other non-governmental agencies.

“This system marginalizes a section of the people being regarded as outcasts,” she said.

She expressed confidence that more communities in Imo State and in the entire Igboland, will soon abolish these reprehensible caste systems.

Oge-Kalu commended the traditional rulers and the people of Amurie Ancient Kingdom, comprising of Amurie Omanze and Oboro Amurie in Isu Local Government of Imo State for setting the pace in abolishing Osu, Ohu, Ume and Diala Caste systems in Igboland.
