Professor Aisha Abdu Ismail of Bayero University, Kano, North West Nigeria, has tasked Nigerian Journalists to have social inclusion in their reportage.
Prof. Ismail was addressing participants, on Wednesday, at a one-day media training on human rights and social inclusion organized by Stallion Times with support from Wole Soyinka centre for investigative journalism funded by MacArthur Foundation.
The scholar, who spoke on a wide-rage of human rights and gender-based violence issues including, “strategies for promoting human rights and social inclusion by the media,” observed that the media have enormous responsibility to report gender-based issues and follow them to logical conclusion.
She dissected the issue of gender-based violence which, according to her, is misconstrued by many people to mean discrimination against female.
She, therefore, explained that gender-based violence is about relationship and that it affects both sexes and should be reported accordingly.

Our Correspondent reports that during the training, which was interactive, participants brought to the fore their various experiences on gender-based violence and were analysed to help the participants in future qualitative reportage.
The Project Coordinator, Isiyaku Ahmed, had, in his address of welcome said, the training, among others, was to “advocate human rights and social inclusion through news coverage.”
“It is also to promote human rights and social inclusion in Kano State,” he added.
