Armyworms Invade Farms In Some Northern States

Report from Kaduna State, North West Nigeria says, the State’s Ministry of Agriculture, has drawn Attention of all maize, rice and sugarcane farmers to the out break of Armyworms in some Northern States of Nigeria.

In a statement, on Thursday, obtained by Nigerian Kicker, the State Commissioner of Agriculture, Murtala Muhammad Dabo, announced the out break to the twenty three local government areas of the state and other stakeholders.

“Armyworms are insects that can cause significant damage to crops, leading to devastating effects on agriculture and food security in any state or country.

“The insects are particularly harmful to maize, rice and sugarcane and according to research the larvae of the armyworms moth feed on plants, leaving behind holes and damage that can reduce yields and destroy entire crops,” he explained.

The State Ministry of Agriculture, which did not name the states where there are out break of the Armyworms said, farmers can only protect their farms from the insects by choosing crop varieties that are resistant to armyworms and keep their farms clean, remove weeds and also rotate crops.

“The famers are also advised to regularly inspect their farms for signs of armyworms and to always apply pesticides specifically labeled for armyworms control.

“They should use insecticides like pyrethroids, organophosphates or carnamates as part of effort to control armyworms in their farms,” he added.

The ministry called on all the farmers in the twenty three local government areas, for the interest of their farm inputs, to report any sign of armyworms in their respective farms to the State Ministry of Agriculture or calling the following numbers 08092979319, 08030453360.
