His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has advised Christians to fast from bad conduct that are habitual and deny themselves even legitimate pleasures as part of the Letten observances.
He gave the advice in a homily Wednesday at the Ash Wednesday Mass at the Holy family Catholic Cathedral, Sokoto.
Cardinal Onaiyekan, also reminded the faithful to take the counsel of Pope Francis to fast from gossiping.
His Eminence quoted the Pope as saying, “if you are free of the act of gossiping, thank your God and if you are guilty of gossiping fast from it otherwise it will negatively impact the grace and joy of one’s Easter celebration.”
Cardinal Onaiyekan said the obligatory days of fasting are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday adding that Christians should pray, fast and give alms to the needy.
Our Correspondent reports that His Eminence Cardinal Onaiyekan signed ashes on the heads of the faithful including Most Reverend Mathew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and other Priests.
