From Jos, the Plateau State capital, North Central Nigeria, comes a report that Catholics in Jos observed Ash Wednesday, joining millions of Christians worldwide in marking the start of the 40-day Lenten season, a period of reflection, prayer, and preparation for Easter.
Archbishop Matthew Ishaya Audu of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos emphasized the importance of sincerity and remorsefulness during this period, warning that Ash Wednesday can become “an empty ritual” without genuine repentance
Our Correspondent reports that, in his Ash Wednesday reflection, Archbishop Audu encouraged Catholics to focus on prayer, fasting, and charitable deeds, stressing that fasting is not just about reducing food intake but also about eliminating evil habits.
He also urged the faithful to care for the less privileged as a sign of repentance and accepting God’s forgiveness.
