Ghana’s President Sacks Chief Justice Torkornoo

President John Mahama of Ghana has reportedly dismissed the Chief Justice of the country, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The sack followed the recommendation of a five-member investigative committee, the presidency announced on Monday.

The decision marks a historic first, as Torkornoo becomes the only sitting Chief Justice in Ghana to be investigated and removed from office.

Torkornoo, Ghana’s third female Chief Justice, appointed in 2023 by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, was suspended in April after three individuals filed petitions alleging misbehavior

The committee, established by President Mahama, reviewed 10,000 pages of evidence and heard testimony from 13 witnesses on behalf of petitioner Daniel Ofori, as well as from Torkornoo and 12 others, including experts.

The panel concluded that grounds for her removal were established, citing “stated misbehavior.”

Two other petitions against her remain unresolved.

Torkornoo has rejected the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

Ghana’s Chief Justices enjoy security of tenure and can only be removed for reasons such as incompetence or misbehavior.
