President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on elected political office holders to recommit themselves to offering selfless service by delivering concrete dividends of democracy to the people.
The President gave the advice in a Nationwide Television and Radio broadcast to mark 2023 Democracy Day.
“On my part and that of my Administration, I pledge our commitment to diligently fulfilling every component of our electoral pact with the people – the ‘Renewed Hope ‘ agenda”, he said.
The President further said the Administration shall exercise it’s authority and mandate to govern with fairness, respect for the rule of law and commitment to always uphold the dignity of the people.
The President explained that the recent harmonization of the retirement age of judicial officers is to strengthen the rule of law, which is a critical pillar of democracy.
“It has become imperative to state that the unnecessary illegal orders used to truncate or abridge democracy will no longer be tolerated”, the president warned.
On the removal of subsidy on fuel, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the decision was taken in the collective interest of the nation.
He observed that the decision will no doubt impose extra burden on the masses of the people.
He, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to sacrifice a little more for the survival of the country adding that their sacrifices shall not be in vain.
“The government I lead will repay you through massive investment in transportation, infrastructure, education, regular power supply, healthcare and other public utilities that will improve the quality of lives”, he added.
On Chief MKO Abiola, in whose memory June 12 is being celebrated, the President said his sacrifices to defend democracy will not be in vain.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu further said Nigerians must never take this Democracy for granted and must forever jealousy guard and protect it like a precious jewel.
