An Islamic Scholar and Secretary-General, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, has raised alarm over what he observed as the deteriorating attitudinal behaviour of people in the society.
Prof. Aliyu, who is also the Chief Imam, Fiber Juma’at Mosque, Jos, Plateau State, North Central Nigeria, raised the alarm in a sermon he delivered, on Friday, in Jos, the State capital.
The Chief Imam, whose sermon was centered on the theme, “Deterioration of attitude and behaviour in our society”, said something must be done quickly to arrest the situation.
According to him, “the situation is so scaring and we are not secured”.
“Why must our youths take advantage of societal festivities to create violence and destructive behaviour?” he asked.
Prof Aliyu observed that the trend is growing by the day and nobody was saying anything or doing something about it.
He pointed out that today, the youths have no respect for the elders instead they go about with dangerous implements which they use to threaten people in their houses.
“We must stand up to the challenge for the survival of the society,” he advised.
Prof Aliyu noted that Religious Leaders are like Mechanics, their duty is to repair and redirect the bad attitude of the people in the society.
“Brothers and Sisters, know it that you are zero if your level of education and social status is without character.
“You want others to say kind words to you, say kind words to others.
“Deal with others in a manner you want them to behave to you. If you want others to respect you then you should respect others.
“Be careful of bad character and behaviour because, it is hateful and detastful in the eyes of God,” he admonished.
The Chief Imam went further to say that the growth and development of a society is based on the good attitude and behaviour of the people not necessarily the education they possess.
“Today, almost everyone is caught in the web of bad character and disrespect to norms and values as well as lack of adherence to the will of God.
“Allah says, woes on those who slander and backbite. Those, who because of their social status for amassing wealth either legally or illegally and become proud and humiliate others.
Prof Aliyu reminded the congregation that the Prophet (pbuh) warned people against such behaviour.
According to him, the Prophet said, “the worst among you, who are distant from God, are the talkatives, who talk uselessly and endlessly swearing over falsehood to establish fake recognition, those who open their mouth wide fabricating lies in order to smear the dignity of others.”
