Nigerian Govt Urges United States To Rethink New Visa Rules

Nigerian Government has appealed to the United States to review its newly introduced visa policy that shortens the stay of Nigerian visitors and restricts them to a single entry per visa.

The new regulation, announced by the U.S. Department of State on Tuesday, affects non-diplomatic and non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerians.

The visas, including the B1/B2, F, and J categories, will now be valid for just three months and will only allow one-time entry into the U.S. The policy took effect immediately, though visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid under their previous terms.

However, in response to the development,  Nigerian government has expressed worry over the decision, describing it as unfair to Nigerians who travel for business, education, family visits, and cultural exchanges.

The government said the new rule does not reflect the friendly relations that have existed between both countries for many years.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that while each country has the right to shape its immigration policies, such decisions should also take into account mutual respect and fair treatment.

Nigeria said it believes the move goes against the idea of balance and equal treatment in bilateral dealings.

The government added that it is still in talks with the U.S. to seek a better outcome and hopes the rule will be reviewed to better serve the interests of both nations.
