Report from Oyo State says, at least 16 people have lost their lives in a tragic accident involving an 18-seater bus and a stationary truck along the Oyo/Ogbomosho Expressway in Oyo town, the Oyo State government has confirmed.
Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency, Adebayo Akinwande, provided details of the incident in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the accident occurred in front of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, with the first report received at exactly 06:21 hours on Tuesday, 25th November 2025, via a phone call.
Akinwande explained that the agency promptly deployed officers to the scene, where investigations indicated that the passenger bus swerved and collided with the stationary Howo truck from behind.
The collision triggered a fire that engulfed both the trailer and the bus, trapping passengers inside.
“Upon arrival at the scene, we observed an 18-passenger Mazda bus, registration number GWL 687 XB (Kano), had swerved and crashed into a stationary Howo trailer, registration number LSR 340 XW (Lagos), from the rear.
The trailer caught fire, and our fire crew quickly initiated rescue operations and extinguished the blaze,” Akinwande said.
The fire service recovered 16 bodies at the scene, while three survivors were immediately transported to a nearby hospital by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, for medical treatment.
The special adviser attributed the accident to overspeeding and the careless parking of heavy trucks along the expressway, warning that such practices continue to pose serious risks to motorists and passengers alike.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full circumstances that led to the tragic incident. – DP
