Professor Mainasara Kurfi Xrays Nigerian Journalists On Ethics

A Mass Communication scholar, Professor Mainasara Kurfi, has observed the need for Nigerian Journalists to know and understand the code of ethics of their profession.

Prof. Kurfi, who is the Head of Department, Bayero University, Kano, North West, Nigeria, gave the advice while delivering a paper at the opening of a two-day training workshop for Senior Journalists in Kano.

Our Correspondent reports that the two-day training workshop is organized by International Press Institute Nigeria in partnership with MacArthur Foundation.

According to Kurfi, “one of the challenges facing Nigeria’s working Journalists is lack of awareness of the code of ethics of their profession”.

Professor Kurfi, whose paper was  titled, ” Understanding media codes and ethics,” noted that many Nigerian journalists are not aware of the code of ethics of their profession”.

“How many Nigerian journalists know and understand the journalistic code of ethics. If they know, do they apply them in their operations?” he asked.

“Journalists need to know the ethics because they are made to protect the public from harm or misleading information. It also help Journalists to do their job effectively”.

He said although, application of the code of ethics has its attendant impedment hence it’s necessary for a serious media house to always conduct in-house training for members.
