Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has trained 40 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Prison Inmates and Retired Civil Servants in Katsina State.
The Director- General (DG), of the Agency, Mr. Olawale Fasanya disclosed this to newsmen on the sideline of the training in Katsina onTuesday.
Represented by the Deputy Director, Enterprisership, Headquarters, Abuja, Alhaji Ado Bello, Mr. Fasanya said that the training was designed to provide entrepreneurship and vocational skills as well as provide equipment to fill the existing gaps to the target group.
“Insecurity has forced many people out of their ancestral homes to temporal abodes called IDPs Camps.
“About 700,000 low income earners, men and women were also released from prisons each year, and about two- third were rearrested after returning home without income or employment”
“A lot of public servants also spend their lives serving the nation without having the opportunity of acquiring skills that will support them after the service”
According to Fasanya, most of these people ran into serious problems after their life adventures and subsequently die from lack of financial resources, ill health among others.
“Therefore, we feel it pertinent that we design important programme to provide an opportunity for these set of people to acquire skills that will make them relevant in the society,” he added.
Twenty out of the 40 participants that benefitted from the training, got 20 Make-Up materials at the rate of N250,000 each, while another set of 20 people got 20 Sowing Machines at the rate of N175,000 each.
A total sum of N8.5million was reportedly expended on the procurement of equipment after the training.
