Sunflower Schools Celebrate Grandparents Day In Kano

It was celebrations galore on Friday in Kano, Kano State, North West Nigeria, when Sunflower Schools located in Bompai area of Kano metropolis, invited the Grandparents of their students to a get-together in the institution premises.

Nigerian Kicker gathered that the Grandparents celebration is the first of its kind in Kano State.

The school children, ranging from Nursery to Primary categories together with the grandparents, were subjected to several educational activities as parts of the celebration.

Musical interlude played at the occasion to connect the grandparents to the past include, Maman Shata, Commodores, Kenny Rogers, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson among others.

Addressing the Participants, one of the Teachers, who acted as the Master of Ceremony, MC, and doubled as the coordinator of the event, Mr. Abdulwahab Umoru, went down memory lane in praises of the founder of Grandparents Day in the United States of America.

Umoru reminded the audience about the struggle of Marian McQuade in 1970 when she began a campaign to establish a special day of recognition for grandparents.

Through her efforts, she reached out to the civic, business, faith, and political leaders and began a statewide campaign for Grandparents Day.

He said it was when Jimmy Carter was the President of the US that the Congress passed the legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents’ Day in the U.S. adding that on August 3, 1978, the then-President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation.

Umoru said, following this international trend, Sunflower schools, Kano decided to organize Grandparents Day to honour the Grandparents community of the Schools.

He expressed the hope that one day Nigeria will also legislate on Grandparents Day.

Speaking on behalf of the Grandparents who honoured the occasion, a former Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Yusuf Ado Kibiya, thanked the management and staff of the Schools for the honour done on the Grandparents.

He called on the management to maintain the high quality leadership in education apparent in their schools.
