Syrian President, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, on Sunday, departed for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
It is reportedly marking the first participation by a Syrian head of state since 1967, the presidency announced.
During the high-level session, Al-Sharaa is scheduled to engage in a series of meetings and discussions with world leaders and international delegations.

The visit comes as Damascus intensifies efforts to secure the permanent lifting of U.S. sanctions, many of which remain in place under the 2019 Caesar Act that targeted the former Assad regime for war crimes during the civil war.
Since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, Syria’s new transitional administration under Al-Sharaa has pursued political and economic reforms, fostered social cohesion, and sought to expand cooperation with regional and international partners.
Assad, who ruled for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Baath Party regime that had held power since 1963. — Agencies via SG
