Be a true scholar and display your scholarship by writing and winning grants for your University. Do away with laziness and lackadaisical attitude towards your responsibility.

Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, North East Nigeria, Professor Umaru Pate, has advised University scholars in Nigeria to leaverage on getting international grants to better themselves and advance the course of their Universities.

Pate, who is also the President of Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), North-West Zone, gave the advice on Tuesday while addressing participants of a one-day workshop on tips for writing Award winning research grants proposals organized by the Association.

“Be a true scholar and display your scholarship by writing and winning grants for your University. Do away with laziness and lackadaisical attitude towards your responsibility.

“You can’t be a true Scholar and live in poverty. Therefore, wake up and stop envying and jealousing those who believe in hard work before enjoyment,” he advised the participants.

Pate, who was also the Chairman of the occasion, vented his anger on some scholars, whom he believes, are only good “in petition writing” that take them to no where, saying such energy should be directed at sustainable, beneficial and enduring scholarship.

He told the participants that from 1993 to date, he has been having contact with international donors and attracting international grants for the various Universities where he had served including University of Maiduguri, Bayero University, Kano and the Federal University, Kashere where his is presently the Vice Chancellor.

He, therefore, advised the participants to develop their skills in writing proposals for grants, which he said “is the essence of this workshop”.

Professor Nasir Faruk, who delivered lecture on the tips for writing proposals for grants, said “you need research because you want to solve a problem”.

He said the primary thing is to research and identify a problem and indicate how to solve it.

According to him, the problem could be local, global, social, scientific or continental adding that who wants to write a proposal should have focus and do away with sensational writings for the sake of promotion.
