Why Late Presentation Is Dangerous For Stroke Patients – NSNS

NSNS President, Prof Morenikeji Komolafe

Nigerian Society of Neurological Sciences (NSNS) rose from its 57th Annual Scientific Conference and General Meetings to declare that most stroke patients in Nigeria do not benefit from treatment and intervention due to “late presentation”.

At the end of the conference and meetings, which held in Benin, the Edo State capital from 5 to 7 of March, 2025, Nigerian neurological scientists made various recommendations which they believe would enhance healthcare services in the areas of stroke management.

In their eight-point recommendations, in a communique signed by Prof Morenikeji Komolafe (President), Dr Emannuel Iwuozo (Secretary) and Prof Frank Imarhiagbe (LOC chairman), the NSNS said, having a national stroke registry would lead to data currency that will help planning for stroke services.

They also said diagnosis of stroke would be enhanced with the availability of investigative modalities such as neuroimaging equipment like Computerised Tomography (CT) scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and others.

They, therefore, called for the subsidization of those investigative mechanism, including transcranial doppler ultrasound scan and others.

NSNS emphasized the need to provide stroke units and comprehensive stroke centres across Nigeria to make “acute stroke care, such as thrombolytic therapy and endovascular thrombectomy readily accessible in Nigeria.”

They called for the “training and employment of more Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Neuro-nurses, Neurointensivists and other rehabilitation professionals” such as “physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, engineers and others so as to address post stroke disabilities and ensure reintegration of stroke survivors back into the community.”
