Gang Violence Reportedly Rocks Kano Community Three Days Running

From Kano, the capital of Kano State, North West Nigeria, comes a report that, residents of Kawo in Nasarawa Local Government Area of the State have raised  alarm over renewed violence linked to suspected gang activity, as clashes in the community entered a third consecutive day on Tuesday.

According to News Point Nigeria’s account from residents, the gang has disrupted business activities, heightened fear among traders, commuters and residents, and revived concerns over the resurgence of organised street violence in parts of the state.

Many residents described the situation as a troubling return of gang-related clashes that have long posed security challenges in some communities across Kano.

A resident, identified simply as Muhammad, said the persistent violence had forced several shop owners to scale down their operations due to growing safety concerns.

“They have not started attacking homes, but they intimidate traders and dispossess them of their goods,” he said.

Residents traced the origin of the latest crisis to a dispute among commercial tricycle operators that reportedly began about three weeks ago.

According to accounts from community members, the disagreement involved operators from different sections of Kawo and gradually escalated into violent confrontations.

One resident, who identified herself as Mama, explained that the tension started when a group of tricycle riders allegedly blocked a major road early in the morning, preventing others from accessing the route.

She claimed that the group openly displayed weapons and threatened rival operators, a development that reportedly resulted in injuries and damage to one of the tricycles involved in the dispute.

The incident, residents said, later triggered a series of reprisal attacks between the opposing groups, further escalating tensions in the area.

Another resident known as Barrister confirmed that the confrontation caused severe traffic congestion and widespread panic among road users.

He noted, however, that ordinary commuters and motorists were not directly targeted during the clashes.

A female resident, who declined to disclose her identity, described the situation as disturbing and called for urgent intervention by relevant authorities before it spirals out of control.

Meanwhile, social commentator Sagiru Yarima blamed the growing violence on increasing drug abuse among young people and the influence of political actors.

According to him, gang-related activities have steadily expanded over the years, with several communities across Kano emerging as flashpoints for violent incidents.

Yarima also expressed concern over reports that some of the groups involved in such activities have begun using locally fabricated firearms, a trend he said poses a serious security threat to residents.

He urged political leaders, traditional rulers and religious figures to take decisive steps to address the challenge, while also calling on citizens to reject all forms of political violence.

In response to the development, the Kano State Police Command said it was closely monitoring the situation and had intensified efforts to restore peace and order in the affected area.

The command stated that many of the confrontations involved rival groups from within the same communities and assured residents that security operations were ongoing to prevent further escalation.

The police also highlighted the recent establishment of a Violent Crime Response Unit, made up of specially trained officers tasked with tackling emerging security threats and violent crimes across the state.

Despite these assurances, many residents say anxiety continues to grow as uncertainty remains over the true scale of the violence and the number of casualties.

As of the time of filing this report, no official casualty figure had been released, leaving many residents worried about what may unfold if the clashes continue unabated.

The situation has heightened calls for swift intervention by security agencies and community leaders to prevent the unrest from developing into a wider security crisis in Kano State.
