2026 World Cup: Switzerland Defeats Canada 2-1 To Claim Top Spot In Group B

Switzerland has, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, defeated Canada 2-1 to  secure first place in Group B at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought victory  at BC Place Stadium, ending the co-hosts’ hopes of winning the group despite a spirited late comeback.

After a cagey first half in which neither side could break the deadlock, Switzerland struck immediately after the restart.

Ruben Vargas put the Swiss ahead less than a minute into the second half, finishing a swift attacking move that stunned the home crowd.

Switzerland doubled their advantage midway through the period when Johan Manzambi capitalized on a defensive error to make it 2-0.

Canada, who entered the match knowing a draw would be enough to top the group thanks to their superior goal difference, responded with renewed urgency after a series of substitutions.

Their persistence paid off in the 76th minute when Promise David scored with his first touch, volleying home from close range to cut the deficit in half.

The hosts pressed for an equalizer during a tense closing spell, creating several dangerous moments from crosses and set pieces.

However, Switzerland’s defense held firm to preserve the victory and secure the group crown.

The result means Switzerland advance to the Round of 32 as Group B winners, earning a favorable knockout path and remaining in Vancouver for their next match.

Canada also advance, but as runners-up, and are expected to face the second-place team from Group A in the knockout stage.

The match carried additional emotion for Canadian supporters, who paid tribute to injured midfielder Ismaël Koné, sidelined after suffering a broken leg in Canada’s previous win over Qatar. Thousands of fans displayed signs bearing his number during the match in a show of solidarity.

Nigerian Kicker reports that Canadian fans, prior to the kick off, we’re seen marching to B.C. Place Stadium in frenzy for the Team’s match against Switzerland.

Other fans also gathered at various public places in Toronto, Pickering, Ajax and Oshawa to watch the match.

Cold swept through the crowd of viewers  when Switzerland scored the two goals few minutes into the second half of the encounter.

However, a thunderous roar swept through the crowd when Canada Team scored their goal in the second half.

Canada is hosting World Cup matches in two cities of Toronto and Vancouver, with a total of 13 matches scheduled during the tournament.
