Federal, Plateau State Governments Unveil Enhanced Security At NIPSS

By Luka Retle Kumbet

Federal Government and Plateau State Government have unveiled stronger security for the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Jos, North Central Nigeria.

This is coming after a terrorist attack that killed three security personnel at the Kuru campus.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the slain officers as “national heroes” and announced immediate emergency measures to protect NIPSS and other critical national assets.

Addressing staff and participants of Senior Executive Course 48, Shettima commended the Institute’s response during the attack.

“When darkness came to the gates of this Institute, it expected to find people who would scatter into the night. Instead, it found men and women who stood their ground,” he said.

“No examination, no thesis, and no seminar could better demonstrate your preparedness than the courage you displayed under fire.”

The Vice President said President Tinubu directed an immediate reinforcement of security around NIPSS and ordered a comprehensive security enhancement plan to be submitted to his office within 72 hours for implementation.

He also assured families of the deceased officers of federal support: “Their sacrifice will not be forgotten. Their children will be our children, and their welfare will remain our collective responsibility.”

As part of urgent steps, Shettima announced the donation of 50 solar-powered lighting units to improve visibility in participants’ residential areas and other vulnerable spots across the campus.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang reaffirmed the state Government’s commitment to protecting NIPSS and other federal institutions along the Kuru-Vom axis.

He announced the state’s interventions including upgraded street lighting, logistical support, and strengthened security operations with federal agencies.

NIPSS Director-General, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, thanked the federal government for its swift response.

He confirmed the Institute had begun a review of its security architecture with security agencies, covering surveillance systems, perimeter security, operational procedures, and emergency response.

Omotayo appealed for federal intervention to deploy an integrated surveillance system, upgrade lighting, reinforce military presence, and create protective buffer zones around the campus.

“For forty-six years, NIPSS has faithfully discharged its mandate despite numerous challenges. We remain committed to providing strategic policy research and leadership development for national progress,” he said.

Our Correspondent reports that, SEC 48 participants, represented by Kabiru Abba and Dr. Toyin Sanni, recounted their experience during the attack and reaffirmed their commitment to complete the programme and deliver policy recommendations to President Tinubu.
