Spain Edge Argentina In Extra Time To Lift 2026 FIFA World Cup

Spain have been crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in an absorbing extra-time final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

The match remained deadlocked throughout regulation time as Argentina produced a disciplined defensive display, while Spain dominated possession and created the better chances without finding a breakthrough.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, kept Argentina in contention with a series of outstanding saves, frustrating the Spanish attack for much of the contest.

The decisive moment finally arrived in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres, finished clinically from close range after Spain unlocked Argentina’s stubborn defence with a well-worked move.

The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters, while Argentina were left chasing an equaliser with limited time remaining.

Argentina’s task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off late in extra time, reducing the South Americans to 10 men.

Despite a spirited late push, the defending champions failed to register a breakthrough as Spain’s defence stood firm to preserve the narrow advantage until the final whistle.

The victory secured Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, ending Argentina’s reign as world champions and capping an impressive tournament in which the Spaniards combined defensive solidity with their trademark possession-based football.

Emotions ran high after the final whistle, with reports of a brief confrontation involving players from both teams before order was restored.

As Spain celebrated a historic triumph, Argentina’s players, including captain Lionel Messi, were visibly devastated after falling just short of retaining the title.

Spain’s victory completed a remarkable campaign that saw them eliminate Portugal, Belgium, France and, ultimately, Argentina on their way to football’s biggest prize, while Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner will be remembered as the goal that restored Spain to the summit of world football.

Nigerian Kicker reports that Presidents of the co-host countries of United States, Canada and Mexico were on ground to officiate in handing over the Trophy to Spain.
