Renowned Canadian Jazz Pianist and music icon, Oliver Jones has died.
He reportedly died at the age of 91.
His family and Justin Time Records announced his passing on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, following a long illness.
Born in Montreal’s Little Burgundy neighborhood on September 11, 1934, Jones was a child prodigy who performed publicly by age five and played in local nightclubs by age ten.
Taught by Daisy Peterson Sweeney (sister of jazz legend Oscar Peterson), Jones shared a lifelong mentorship and friendship with Peterson.
He performed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival nearly every year from 1981 to 1999, and later returned for special landmark performances.
Awards and Legacy
Oliver Jones was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in May 2023, and was also named an Officer of the Order of Canada (1993) and received multiple Juno and Félix awards.
He will be remembered widely as a gentle soul, virtuoso performer, and vital anchor of Canada’s jazz community. – CBC
